Tamale, July 11, GNA – Mr Abuga Pele, Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga in the Upper East Region on Sunday donated 2,600 assorted books to the Tamale Girls International School to help address the inadequacy of books in the school’s library to enhance quality teaching and learning.
The books valued at 50 million cedis was sourced from World Outlook International (WOI), a UK based non-governmental organization (NGO) that also made similar donations to the Chiana and Sirigu Senior Secondary Schools.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Pele said because of parents’ preference for boys, girls from the Northern regions had suffered so much in their quest for education and needed urgent support to enable them to come out successfully and contribute their quota to national development.
Mr Pele called on public-spirited individuals and benevolent organizations to assist the Tamale Girls International School to encourage the proprietor to establish branches in the Upper East and Upper West regions that lacked such institutions to help encourage girl-child education.
He said he would work hard to get computers from the WOI and other NGOs for the school since it was the only private school in the three Northern regions that had the highest concentration of girls to make them computer literate.
The Chiana-Paga MP appealed to the students to take their studies seriously and avoid men who would want to influence them with money to take advantage of them and destroy their education.
He said: “don’t be excited by today’s world, there is a better world for you tomorrow if you are able to make it in education”. Mr Pele thanked the NGO and Mr Joe Achiana, the Country Director of the NGO for acting urgently to his request and expressed the hope that they would continue to help him to provide more assistance to schools in the area.
Mr Albert Atutiga, Proprietor, who received the books said the school had a student population of 1,500 girls and about 70 per cent of them came from the three Northern Regions, 20 per cent from Brong Ahafo and 10 percent from the rest of the country.
