Koforidua Aug. 20, GNA – The Eastern Regional branch of the newly formed Veterans Cadres Movement (VCM), on Thursday advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept in good faith, the results of the Akwatia re-run polls held on Tuesday. According to the Cadres, that would safeguard Democracy and help peace to prevail at Akwatia and in Ghana at large.
To the VCM, the violence and chaos that preceded the elections was unfortunate, which should not be repeated again. In a statement issued in Koforidua and signed by Nana Addo-Aikins, a leading member of the VCM said, the movement observed that Ghana had reached a stage in its national development where maturity, tolerance and understanding should be the guiding principles in politics and electioneering campaigns.
The statement urged Mr Baba Jamal to leave the Akwatia election alone and be content with the position of Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, and that he should concentrate on the job so that the region does not lose its deserved share of national development. The statement advised Mr Baba Jamal and the NDC to abandon their intentions of going to court again, since any such action will not help the national cause.
The statement congratulated the security agencies for the efficient discharge of their assignment to maintain peace at Akwatia during the election. It said the true solution to electoral violence in Ghana however lay in a fundamental change of the current system of democratic governance and national development. The VCM is a nation-wide gathering of concerned and time-tested operatives of the erstwhile People’s National Defence Council (PNDC), whose basic objective is to help unite the nation and promote harmony between and among contending political forces.
