The Mount Mary Training College at Somanya in the Eastern Region is reeling under huge electricity bills, averaging 1.8 million cedis a month.
Mr Joseph Otoo, Principal, made this known to the Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Francis Osafo-Mensah, who was on a familiarisation tour to the college on Monday.
Mr Otoo said the late releases of funds from the government could seriously affect the running of the college.
Mount Mary Training College, which is the only French Teacher Training institution in Ghana, enjoys special status from the government and other foreign beneficiaries, particularly the French government.
Mr Otoo attributed the high electricity bills to the use of various equipment and electronic gadgets for its practical work.
He said that, in order to scale down the bills, air conditioners in the classrooms have been shut down while some teaching aid machines
Mr Otoo appealed to the government to rehabilitate the access route to the school, which is in a deplorable state.
The Regional Minister, who was conducted round facilities of the college, commended the staff for their hard work and urged them to improve on their performance.
The college has received funding from the French government, enabling its tutors to pursue masters and doctorate degree programmes in France.
It also pays one-third of the bill of students who undergo practical attachment in neighbouring Francophone countries.
The College has been provided it with a satellite dish that enables students to receive tuition from France and access the dynamics of the language in French-speaking countries worldwide.
The French Embassy recently announced its intention to support two additional colleges in the Ashanti and Northern Regions to expand access of pupils receiving tuition in the language at the basic level.
