Bolgatanga, Dec 27, GNA – Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have been urged to constantly maintain their vehicles, observe road traffic regulations and drive with extra care to ensure the safety of life and property.
Mr. Kweku Bempah, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in charge of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) in the Upper East Region, made the call in Bolgatanga during a road safety educational campaign organized by the Regional Road Safety Committee. He bemoaned the spate of road accidents in the Region and the country as whole, and attributed it to over speeding, drink-drive, overloading and poor maintenance of vehicles among others. He said the police were embarking on an exercise to check traffic offences during the Christmas festivities and anyone caught disobeying traffic regulations would be dealt with.
ASP Bempah said it was unfortunate that breadwinners of many families are lost through avoidable accidents leading to difficult times for the families.
He appealed to drivers to exercise extreme caution when driving especially during the festivities.
Mr. Mohamed Sumani Mbo, the Road Safety Coordinator in charge of the three Northern Regions explained that more than 90 per cent of road accidents were caused by human errors and were therefore avoidable. He appealed to drivers to adhere to the culture of maintenance of their vehicles.
An official from the Regional Licensing office, Mr. Noah Tetteh Martey, advised drivers who drive in the night to take enough rest during the day so as to be alert when driving at night.
