Motor Courts Advocated

Mr. Vincent Appiah, Senior Technical officer of the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (VELD) in Cape Coast, has appealed to district assemblies to establish motor courts to handle traffic offences.

He said this had become necessary because traffic offences were being delayed at the traditional courts.

Mr Appiah made the call at a press conference the Pedu Junction Safety Committee, formed to promote road safety in the town, held to launch a document dubbed: ’10-point system’ to help enhance its objectives.

The committee’s membership includes representatives from the GPRTU, NADMO, municipal guards, MTU and the local secretariat of the National Road Safety Commission.

The document, which is to help check careless driving, speeding, and parking at unauthorised places, would be forwarded to the municipal assembly for study and adoption.

Mr. Appiah suggested that such courts should also have driving schools attached to retrain drivers.

Mr Ekow Eshun, vice chairman of the committee, said before the

committee was formed two years ago 68 accidents resulting in 17 deaths and 168 injured were recorded on the road between the University of Cape Coast and Yamoransa within one year.

But due to the education campaign the committee recorded only two accidents with one death on the same stretch of road last year.
