Motor accidents claim 171 lives in VR in 2011

Ho, Jan. 16, GNA – A total of 171 people lost their lives and 898 others got injured in 736 road crashes in the Volta Region in 2011.

Mr Frederick Senanu Lumor, Volta Regional Motor Traffic and Trasport Unit (MTTU) Commander, made this known in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Ho.

He said 138 of the accidents were fatal, 309 serious and 289 minor and observed that most of the crashes were due to driver negligence.

Mr Lumor said 178 motorbikes, 570 commercial and 314 private vehicles respectively were involved in those crashes.

Mr Lumor said Ho, the Regional capital, recorded the highest number of accidents which stood at 309 with Kete-Krachi recording the least, 57 cases. He said drivers were not observing road signs and

driving regulations despite regular education. Mr Lumor said his outfit had resolved to intensify its work this

year to reduce motor accidents and called for collaboration from all stakeholders.
