Mother of abandoned baby granted bail

Bibiani (W/R), May 26, GNA – The Bibiani magistrate’s court has granted Joyce Kwarteng, mother of the abandoned baby at the Sefwi-Bekwai market 20 million cedis bail.

She pleaded guilty with explanation and will re-appear on June 30.

The court ordered the police and the Department of Social Welfare to do a social research and send the mother to undergo a psychiatric examination, following her abnormal behaviour in court.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector A.C. Ohene told the court, presided over by Mr Dickson Daketsey that, on May 2, this year, a passer-by, Miss Perpetual Adade, heard the cry of a baby at the Sefwi-Bekwai market and traced the noise to the scene, only to find the female baby dumped in one of the stalls.

Joyce was arrested when a report was made to the Sefwi-Bekwai police and with the assistance of a prophetess. The baby is still in the care of the Bibiani Police.
