Mother jailed for dumping baby

A Magistrate’s Court at Bibiani sentenced a 34-year-old mother, who dumped her five-week old baby girl at a refuse ground, for 24 months.

Anabili Ataano, who was charged for exposing a child to danger, pleaded guilty. Detective Chief Inspector Alex Asamoah told the court, presided over by Mr Osei Kofi Amoako, that the convict allegedly stuffed the baby’s mouth with rag to prevent her from crying, wrapped her in polythene bag and left it at a refuse dump, close to the Bibiani lorry terminal.

The court heard that some neighbours, who saw Ataano with the polythene bag, became suspicious when she dropped it and attempted to escape.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said when the neighbours searched the polythene bag they found the baby.

He said the rescuers rushed the child to the Bibiani Government Hospital and handed over the mother to the police.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said the baby has been sent to an orphanage in Sekondi.
