Mother fined for exposing baby to harm

Twifo Praso (C/R), Jan. 24, GNA – Faustina Ninchi, a 38-year-old hairdresser and a nursing mother was on Friday fined 250,000 cedis for exposing her five month-old-baby to harm, by the Twifo Praso District Magistrate’s court at Twifo Praso.

Ninchi, who pleaded guilty with explanation, was also bonded to be of good behaviour for two months, or serve two months in jail. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector William Kwesi Yeboah told the court presided over by Mr Joseph Blay that on January 3, 2005 that, Ninchi sent her baby boy to Gyankobo for medical treatment.

He said when she realised that the baby was still ill after the treatment, she left the boy at her father-in-law’s house at Gyankobo, and decided not go back for him and a report was made the to the police. The Prosecution said upon a tip-off, Ninchi was traced to her village at Bobi and was arrested.

In her explanation, she told the court that she had gone to her village to raise a loan for the baby’s medical expenses, but decided to sleep over when she failed to get early assistance.
