Mother and daughter drown in manhole

Tragedy hit a family at Atwima-Agogo in the Atwima District on Wednesday, November 6, when a 23-year-old mother, Mrs Beatrice Owusu and her one-year-old daughter drowned in a open manhole in front of their uncompleted house.

The water level in the nine-feet deep manhole measured a little over six feet.

Mr Gideon Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Directorate, told the Ghana News Agency that about 3 p.m. on the fateful day, the woman informed the Mr Michael Owusu, the husband that she was visiting the sister at Santasi, in Kumasi.

She left with her one year-old daughter, Juliet.

Mr Boateng said the husband waited for the whole night but the two did not returned as expected.

The next morning, Mr Michael Owusu saw the bodies of the two victims in the manhole and he reported the incident to the police at the Abuakwa.

He said there was nothing to indicate they died through violence. The bodies have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for autopsy while the husband of was assisting the police in investigations.
