Morocco and Nigeria Set for WAFCON Finals Showdown After Dramatic Semi-Final Victories

Hosts Morocco and African giants Nigeria will clash in a blockbuster Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final this Saturday, following two gripping semi-final victories on Tuesday night.

Morocco edged past Ghana in a tense penalty shootout at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, while Nigeria ended South Africa’s title defence with a dramatic 2-1 win in Casablanca, sealed by a stoppage-time stunner from Michelle Alozie.

Earlier in the day, the Super Falcons had taken the lead just before halftime through a coolly converted penalty by Rasheedat Ajibade. South Africa hit back in the second half with Linda Motlhalo scoring from the spot in the 60th minute, setting up a nervy finish between the two powerhouses of African women’s football.

With the clock ticking into injury time, Alozie floated in a hopeful free kick that was missed by everyone, including South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and nestled into the back of the net, sparking scenes of celebration from the Nigerian bench.

In Rabat, Morocco were made to work hard by a spirited Black Queens side. Ghana stunned the home crowd with a 26th-minute opener from Stella Nyamekye, before Sakina Ouzraoui equalised for the hosts in the second half. After 120 minutes of football, the game went to penalties, where Morocco held their nerve to win 4-2.

Both matches highlighted the drama, quality, and unpredictability that has defined this year’s tournament, which was originally scheduled for 2024 but postponed due to a scheduling clash with the Paris Olympics.

Ghana and South Africa will now face off in the third-place playoff on Friday in Casablanca, while Morocco and Nigeria will battle it out for continental glory on Saturday in front of what is expected to be another packed stadium in Rabat.

This year’s WAFCON will be remembered for its intensity, passionate crowds, and thrilling football.
