More Teachers join strike

Ada Foah, Nov 06, GNA – Some members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Dangme East District have joined the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) strike to press home their demand for better conditions of service.

A visit by the GNA to some schools in Ada Foah showed that the schools remained closed while those that opened had no teachers. At Azizanya D/C Primary School the pupils were playing football, others were walking aimlessly whilst some did menial jobs at the central market.

Madam Grace Avickson, the Headmistress, some of the GNAT members claimed they were joining the strike to show their solidarity. At the Roman Catholic Primary JSS most pupils were in their classrooms but there was no teacher.

The story was not different at the Fiagbedu School where the classrooms were almost empty and the few students around were grouped under trees discussing their plight.

The situation was however different at the Presbyterian Primary School as the teachers were going about their normal duties but it was alleged that some of the students took advantage of their strike to indulge in immoral activities.

When contacted Mr Ebenezer Narh Puplampu, the District GNAT Secretary, said GNAT has not declared any strike to warrant the teachers’ unpatriotic attitude because the association is still in dialogue with the government.

He said it was only when there was a deadlock that they could declare the strike and asked the members to go back to the classroom while negotiations continued.
