More rains Raise Fears of Disease Outbreak at Kaneshie

Accra, June 24, GNA – Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, on Wednesday morning witnessed another flooding following a heavy downpour, thus deepening the fears of the city authorities of an imminent outbreak of diseases.

It would be recalled that flood waters killed seven people and destroyed property worth millions of Ghana cedis after a similar heavy rainfall last Friday night.

When the Ghana News Agency visited some of flood hit areas on Wednesday, there was no confirmed report of any casualty although the rising water level had led to serious traffic jams. Some residents at Kaneshie expressed fears of a possible outbreak of cholera in the area as a result of the refuse dswept into many homes following last Friday’s heavy downpour. One resident complained about individuals who habitually threw rubbish and human excreta into gutters and in front of uncompleted houses in the area.

The sight of the knee-level stockpile of rubbish strewn over some 300 metres on the street as well as the horde of houseflies hovering around behind the Kaneshie Taxi Rank and other places was sickening enough to send people spitting. The man expressed the fear that if the Zoomlion private waste company, did not come to clear the rubbish, residents would be at the mercy of an outbreak of cholera.
