More Ghanaians arrive from Libya

Accra, March 10, GNA – After the initial evacuation of 55 Ghanaians to Accra from Libya on February 26, 2011 by the government, a day hardly passes by without more stranded Ghanaians being brought in from that country.

With the arrival of 250 more Ghanaians at the Kotoka International Airport from that country this afternoon, an estimated 2,700 Ghanaians had now been brought back from Libya.

Mr Baba Jamal, Deputy Minister of Information, told the Ghana News Agency at the Elwak Stadium in Accra today, where the evacuees were processed upon their arrival, that the evacuation exercise would continue until every Ghanaian who is stranded in Libya is brought back safely to Ghana.

He said two chattered aircraft were expected to bring down more Ghanaians from that country later in the day.

Mr. Jamal said the exercise would continue until all Ghanaians stranded in Libya were brought back no matter the cost. “No amount of money could be equated to human life,” he noted. The Deputy Minister urged the evacuees only to tell the truth about their experiences.

“Do not talk about harrowing experiences which you have only heard of as rumors and cannot verify. You only cause unnecessary panic here when you do that,” he said. The exercise is being undertaken by the government of Ghana with assistance from the International Organization for Migration.
