Monkey Sanctuary generates revenue

Fiema (B/A), Oct. 2, GNA – Forty million cedis was realized from tourists who visited the Monkey Sanctuary at Buabeng-Fiema in the Nkoranza District of Brong Ahafo last year.

Mr. Benjamin Adu-Darko, Assemblyman, told the Ghana News Agency that there was a remarkable improvement in revenue collection as the number of tourists to the sanctuary increased yearly, saying the revenue generated was used to support development projects in the two communities.

The management committee of the sanctuary also bought some low-tension poles for an electrification project, the Assemblyman added. Mr Adu-Darko said the committee offered two million cedis as bursaries to support eight students from the area towards their Senior Secondary School education last academic year.

Some of the money was also used to renovate schools in the communities, he said and expressed gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for its financial support for the preservation of the sanctuary.

He appealed to the Nkoranza District Assembly to provide a place of convenience and a health facility and also expand of the six-roomed guesthouse as it could no longer cope with the increasing number of visitors.

Mr Adu-Darko appealed to the Assembly to tar the road from Tankor to Fiema to facilitate the movement of residents and visitors.
