Mr Abdul Razak Yakubu, the Community Affairs Manager of Goldfields Ghana Limited (GGL), Damang Mine, has urged parents to devote greater attention to the education of their wards.
He said every year, students from surrounding communities, who excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination would receive the GGL scholarship to further their education in second cycle and tertiary institutions.
Mr Yakubu said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Kyekyewere, when the company awarded scholarships to forty brilliant but needy students in its operational area.
He said this year; the company will have two streams of scholarships, and “the company has committed $30,000.00 through its Goldfield Ghana Foundation to sponsor the forty beneficiaries.”
He noted that the Damang Mine will continue to support deprived communities in their catchment area to improve the educational standards among students in the area.
Mr Yakubu called on parents and teachers to monitor their wards to ensure that even at the secondary level they turn out with good results and take advantage of the opportunity available for them study harder.
Mr Joseph Donkor, a parent on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the management of the mine for accepting to assist their wards.
