Accra, Sept. 10, GNA- The Ministry of Health (MOH) has decided to train 1,200 Health Care Assistants (HCA) by the end of December this year.
This is to augment the effort of professional health care providers at all health centres, District and Regional hospitals as well as the Teaching hospitals.
A statement issued in Accra on Friday and signed by Mr S. Owusu Agyei, Chief Director of the Ministry said the training would be carried out in all regions and teaching hospitals as a result of the mass exodus of health professionals.
The statement said the Health Care Assistants would not be a replacement for health professionals, but would play a non-professional role to enable x-ray and laboratory technicians, nurses and other professionals in the health sector have enough time to concentrate on their core functions.
It said the shortage of health professionals had led to increased work load on the few professionals who were also overburdened with the performance of non-professional duties.
The statement said the decision to train the HCA was therefore, meant to provide support to health professionals to enable them deliver more effectively. 10 Sept. 04
