Mr. Stephen Abubakari, the Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), has appealed to passengers to avoid making unguarded and passionate political statements whiles on board MMT buses.
He said provocative statements in buses could spark confusion that could distract the drivers’ attention and lead to accidents.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Monday, Mr. Abubakari said despite the freedom of association and expression, “it is incumbent on us all to do so at the appropriate place and time but not in vehicles which contravenes road safety regulations”.
He said passengers were now being sensitized and educated about the ill-effect of doing politics in buses, and how to comport themselves for safer journey.
He said the MMT authorities would, in collaboration with the police and the National Road Safety Commission, institute a special task force at terminals and security check points in the region.
The essence is to help check and forestall pre-election violence and accidents in commercial buses, as well as arresting passengers who might flout such bye-laws in the region before, during and after the December polls, Mr. Abubakari said.
“Some of them would be compelled to be dropped from the buses when it is reported that they have distracted the attention of the driver,” Mr Abubakari added.
He urged passengers to co-operate with staff, MMT officials and other stakeholders for efficient service delivery, and should not hesitate to report any worker of the company who behaved unprofessionally whilst on duty.**
