President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was a painful moment for the entire nation, but believes the Black Stars have redeemed themselves by booking a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Mahama admitted that missing the AFCON for the first time in decades was a major disappointment, given Ghana’s long-standing presence at the tournament.
“Failing to qualify for the AFCON was heart-wrenching for all Ghanaians,” he said. “Ghana has always been a permanent fixture at the tournament, so it was quite painful.”
However, Mahama praised the team for bouncing back in style by securing qualification to the World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“The boys have made up for it by qualifying for the World Cup,” he added, highlighting the significance of the achievement.
Ghana sealed their place at the global showpiece after a 1-0 victory over Comoros in Accra, marking their fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Mahama’s remarks reflect the mood of many Ghanaians, disappointed by the AFCON setback, but now filled with renewed pride and optimism as the Black Stars prepare to compete with the world’s best once again.
