The Mion District Assembly in the Northern Region has successfully completed its task of naming the streets to beat the September 30, deadline directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Daniel Wudinayi Makanda, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Mion, briefing the GNA at Sang at the weekend, after a meeting with the chiefs and people of the area to brief them on the exercise, said a total of ten streets had been named in the district capital of Sang with directional sign boards erected.
The ten streets include the Kpatuya road, Kushilo road, Duum road, Roman Catholic road, Sapi road and Kpabia road. The rest are Sang-Tamale road, Trenyaani road, Alhaji Zakaria road, Sang Lana road and Yendi road.
He said the exercise had been successful following the formation and inauguration of the Streets naming and property Addressing Team (SAT) in April 25, 2013 and tasked with the responsibility of mapping and assigning appropriate names to streets and numbering of houses.
Mr Makandan said, the street naming and property addressing was a continuous exercise and stressed that though the District Assembly had completed naming the streets it would not hesitate to name more roads and streets as and when new areas develop.
He said a few challenges they encountered in the exercise, which had caused some delays, was that, there was no area map of the district and that the officials were only relying on the Town and Country Planning office in Tamale for the exercise.
He said the district was now waiting for the Satellite image for the property addressing exercise to begin and expressed the hope that all would be done before the September 30, deadline directive issued by President Mahama.
He stressed the importance of the street naming and property numbering saying, “It would improve revenue mobilization as well as facilitate the development of district assemblies in the country”.
He said the Mion District Assembly had provided an office space, equipped with computers, photocopier, printer, scanners and motorbikes to ensure that the street naming and property addressing exercise continued even after the deadline of September 30, this year.
The Mion District has so far been the first in the Northern Region to complete the street naming exercise.
