The Minority in Parliament is demanding an immediate national security briefing to address the escalating violent conflicts and insecurity in parts of the country.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Minority Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, John Ntim Fordjour stated that the situation has resulted in loss of lives, mass displacement, and growing fear among affected communities particularly in Binyuri and Sampa in the Northern and Bono region.
“The conflict that took place in Binyuri resulted in an estimated 10,000 people fleeing to Burkina Faso, another 13,000 to the Ivory Coast, and over 48,000 residents displaced within the Sola-Kalba-Tuna and Bolonbamboi districts.”
The renewed Sampa Chieftaincy tensions has resulted in multiple deaths and heightened tensions.
Ntim Fordjour emphasized the need for Parliament to take immediate interest in the welfare and security of affected citizens, stating, “Lives are more important, security is more important than anything else that we demand accountability on.”
The Minority wants the Ministers for Interior and Defence to brief Parliament within the next week on the government’s plan to restore peace and safety.
The Minority insists that protecting citizens’ lives should be the priority, and Parliament must demonstrate keen interest in addressing these conflicts.
