Minority begs Rawlings: ‘Guide us to victory 2020’

The Minority in parliament has assured the founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it will closely work with him to ensure that the party returns to power in 2020.

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu had, on Thursday April 6, led a delegation of NDC legislators to visit former President Jerry John Rawlings at his home in Accra, where he called for unity within the party towards the future.

He said: “The party suffered defeat as a government into opposition following the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, but that is not the end of it. The calabash has only been broken and the pieces can be gathered together again.

“We trust that if you guide us and lead us well and the party goes through a proper process of reorganisation to strengthen its grassroots…we will not be in opposition.

“We want to assure you that we want to work with you …going into the future. We want to act strong under your leadership and guidance for us to have a united front of the NDC irrespective and regardless of our personal differences.”

Since the defeat of the party, there have been allegations and counter-allegations within the leadership. Other members have expressed various opinions and pointed out to various issues that resulted in the party’s loss.

However, Mr Haruna has urged restraint, adding that members can express themselves “but should not be done in a manner that will jeopardise the chances of the party and its preparedness for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections”.

For him, the party “must take a collective responsibility in accepting the past and a collective responsibility to work together going into the future”.
