The Deputy Minority Leader James Klutse Avedzi has stated that President Akufo-Addo could have nominated his Deputy Ministers earlier to enable the Appointments Committee vet them.
Speaking to Naa Darkuah Dodoo, our parliamentary correspondent immediately after they boycotted sitting for the vetting of the nominees, he lamented that, they [parliamentarians] are going for recess due to the Easter holidays and should they extend sitting, it will take them to the weekend of Easter.
‘’The president could have nominated the people earlier and the work would have been done earlier. We are going for recess; we are going for Easter and if we go beyond this week, it means that our sitting will take us up the weekend of Easter which is not good.
Members should at least have two or three days to rest before we go for Easter activities,’’ he added. He said, they proposed for the committee to rise today [Wednesday] ‘’but we have considered the plea by the Majority to go up to Friday,’’ he hinted.
He decried that parliamentarians are tired and should have taken a break. Mr. Avedzi accused the Majority of deliberately delaying the process. The number of Ministers appointed he noted ”is waste of time and resources”.
‘’Is a deliberate act by the Majority to delay the process so that the mass nomination and appointment can be approved by the House.
This is waste of time and resources.’’ When asked if this could be described as financial loss to the state, he said: ‘’legally we are working so nobody can say that is financially loss to the state, but indirectly is a loss because this cost is something can be completely avoided.’’
