Accra, Oct 12, GNA – The ministry of Education and Sports has warned soccer fans to be wary of persons or agents parading as visa contractors for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
A statement in Accra on Tuesday signed by Mr O.B. Amoah, deputy minister of Education and Sports said the Ministry had not authorised any “Agents or Persons” to act on its behalf or on behalf of any governing football association with regard to the acquisition of German visas for the World Cup.
It assured the general public that the ministry would soon come out with the “modalities in connection with the acquisition of the visas for the tournament.”
“This would be announced after the ministry of Ministry of Education and Sports, FIFA and the Ghana Football Association have worked out Ghana’s quota for spectators for the matches under normal FIFA rules and guidelines for the impending Germany 2006 World Cup Football Tournament,” it emphasised.
Ghana booked her ticket to participate in the 2006 World Cup on Saturday, with an emphatic 4-0 away whitewash of Cape Verde, leaving in her trail Dr Congo and South Africa whose efforts could only earn them slots in the Nations Cup billed for Egypt.
The Black Stars’ qualification has inspired a lot of anxiety among soccer fans, who are desirous of travelling to Germany to watch the competition, leading to the emergence of sinister cheer groups and tour directors.
The ministry’s directive is therefore seen by analysts as a step in the right direction to forestall fraud and save it from the machinations of unscrupulous “connection men.”
