Yendi (NR) Dec. 10, GNA- Mr Mahama Ayariga, Deputy Minister of Education has warned that head teachers whose schools are not performing well in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE would be withdrawn from office and return to the classroom.
He said there is therefore the need for heads of basic schools to instill discipline in tutors and students to help reverse the situation.
Mr Ayariga who gave the warning in Yendi in the Northern Region, called on Education Oversight Committees, Parents Teacher Associations, School Management Committees and other stakeholders in education to help address the challenges facing schools nationwide.
Mr Ayariga was addressing an educational forum organised by Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service for stakeholders from Yendi Municipality, Zabzugu/Tatale, Nanumba North, Saboba and Chereponi Districts to seek their views on the falling standards of education.
He said the educational authorities are proposing that teachers should organise extra classes for Junior High School students to improve on their performance in the BECE, scheduled for April next year.
He said plans are under way to recruit volunteer teachers to support under staff schools, whilst the Chief Examiners report would be made available to teachers to know how their students performed.
Mr Ayariga said $55 million from Global Partnership, would be used as school grants as part of measures to improve on schools.
Global Partnership is an international body that seeks to alleviate poverty.
The Regional Director of Education, Madam Elizabeth De-Souza revealed that 12 schools scored zero per cent in the BECE exams in the region, which she said was not good enough, hence the need to improve on the situation through hard work.
The Municipal Chief Executive Mr Issah Zakaria appealed to Ministry of Education to provide books to stock a library complex that has been built for more than five years in Yendi.
