Ministry To Expand Pipe Systems In Rural Areas

Accra, (Greater Accra) 14 Oct. The Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Alhaji Amadu Seidu, has said under the Ministry’s water sector rehabilitation project, existing pipe systems in 33 urban areas throughout the country are being expanded to meet current demands. Alhaji Seidu who announced this in an interview with newsmen in Accra at the weekend said this would help solve the perennial water shortages facing these areas. He mentioned Koforidua and Winneba townships in particular and assured the people that as soon as funds are available the dams serving them will be dredged to help increase their water supply. The Deputy Minister said plans are under way to rehabilitate the Weija dam, adding that when completed the daily water output of the dam will be increased from 22 million gallons to 30 million gallons. Alhaji Seidu was not rpt not happy about the negative activities of farmers and fishermen which he said often lead to land degradation and water pollution. He gave the assurance that efforts are being made by his ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Forestry, Environment, Science and Technology and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through public education to arrest the situation.
