Ministry Embarks On Street Naming And House Numbering

A programme to name streets and to number houses is currently being carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) and Ga District Assembly to facilitate identification, postal delivery, ambulance and police emergency call services.

In Accra the programme have been completed in Ayawaso, Okaikoi and Kpeshie Sub-metropolitan areas, while the remaining areas are on-going and that the major problem confronting the assemblies is the lack of funds.

Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said this in Parliament on Tuesday during question time. He said in Accra alone, the exercise is estimated to cost over 5.4 billion cedis and that after the successful completion of the project in the three assemblies it would be extended country-wide.

He said his Ministry appreciates the importance and the necessity of the role street names and numbered houses play in the country’s development and that since last year it has initiated moves to undertake the programme throughout the country.
