Ministry donates to refugees

Gomoa Budumburam (C/R), Aug. 29, GNA – Mrs Gladys Asmah, Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs, on Friday donated food items worth 22 million cedis to children at the Liberian Refugee camp at Gomoa Budumburam in the Central Region.

The food, which included rice, sugar, cooking oil and frozen chicken, was presented to the children to make them celebrate August, which is a month for children.

Mrs Asmah said the donation was also in response to an appeal made by Liberian women during the just-ended Accra Peace Talks on Liberia. She said she would help women at the camp to fight for their rights since they contributed to the development of their nation. Mrs Asmah expressed the hope that peace would be restored in Liberia.

She congratulated the women who were at the Peace Talks for contributing towards the agreement.

Ms Irene Jayee, President of the Refugee Women, who received the items said women had worked hard to sustain the camp, which had been in existence for the past 13 years.

She said the majority of the children at the camp were orphans and urged the government to help cater for them.
