The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has come under attack for allegedly leaking details of the itinerary of former President Jerry John Rawlings’ trips abroad to the media, which in turn put a political spin on them and thereby foment trouble in the country.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi West, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who made the allegation, advised whoever is responsible for such an aberration to desist from it since it goes to widen the gulf between the government and the past administration and, for that matter, President Kufuor and ex-President Rawlings.
Hon. Nketiah was speaking in an interview with ”The Daily Dispatch” recently in Parliament. The interview elicited his views on the relations between President Kufuor and ex-President and what can be done to promote the desired rapport between the two.
Alluding to the media reports about the former President’s trip to Congo and the alleged coup plot, Hon. Nketiah believed that, ”The information that is coming out indicates that somebody has privileged information about your movement and then he turns it around pressmen who add other things to it and present you as a bad person.”
Such stories, he said, are dangerous to the image of the country but the government and its, ”functionaries seem to be enjoying it and so when it goes on they acquiesce and hence it continues. This can’t develop good relations between the former President and the current one.”
Asked what could be done to improve the relations between the two, he said as the, ”Head of the Ghanaian family,” President Kufuor should take the initial step to stall the leakages and this will enable ex-President Rawlings to have confidence in the system.
President Kufuor, he again suggested, should take measures to ensure that whatever strained relationship exists is corrected, adding that in the Ghanaian family, when there is a problem, it is the responsibility of the head to solve it.
