Minister urges parents to take advantage capitation grant

Mirada, Sept 15, GNA – Mr Charles Bintim, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has said the government was spending 113 million cedis as Capitation Grant for pupils of all basic schools in the country.

He said the programme was introduced to encourage parents to send their children to school to reduce the high rate of illiteracy in the country.

Mr Bintim said this at Mirada as part of his three-day official tour of the Upper West Region to find out the problems and challenges confronting workers of decentralized departments. He inspected projects in the Lawra and Nadowli districts and addressed chiefs and people.

Mr Bintim said the government had also received grants of 60 million dollars and 10 million Euros from the World Bank and the French Government respectively under the Community based Rural Development Project.

The money will be used to build small-scale dams for agricultural purposes and urged the farmers to take advantage of the facility to increase production. He advised chiefs to collaborate with district assemblies to plan and implement projects so as not to impose projects on communities.
