Minister seeks public support for demolition of Sodom and Gomorrah

Nungua, Sept. 10, GNA – Nii Armah Ashietey, Greater-Accra Regional Minister, on Thursday appealed for public support for the intended demolition of Sodom and Gomorrah slum in the regional capital.

“I am pleading with you to bear with us. to pull down Sodom and Gomorrah,” he said when he addressed the Third Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the Greater-Accra branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers at Nungua.

Nii Ashietey explained that: “We are not doing this because we are insensitive, but because the condition of living at the place is inhuman.”

He said one had to visit the slum before he or she could fully appreciate the need for government to take that firm decision.

Sodom and Gomorrah is a sprawling slum within the central business district of Accra with serious sanitation problems.

Last week, Nii Ashietey announced government’s decision to evict the more than 40,000 squatters from the slum, without any form of

compensation or resettlement package.

The announcement was met with different public outcry in the media.
