Minister outlines criteria for selecting model schools

Accra, July 4, GNA – Government’s criteria for selecting schools to be upgraded to a model one would be guided by the principles of cost effectiveness, quality and equity in provision and management of education. Indicators such as land, infrastructural facilities, enrolment and academic achievement, manpower situation in each school and teachers in the locality and school were used as the core criteria to select the schools.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Alhaji Rashid Bawa said this in Parliament on Friday during question time. Nana Asante Frempong, NPP-Kwabre, wanted to know the criteria used for selecting schools to be upgraded to a model one. The Minister said in line with a policy statement made by President John Agyekum Kufuor to the effect that one senior secondary school in each of the 110 districts of the country was to be developed into a model school, the Ministry set up a technical committee to come out with proposals to guide the government in the selection of these schools. He said District Directors of Education in consultation with the District Chief Executives (DCEs) and District Coordinating Directors were requested to send their recommended school through their respective Regional Directors of Education.

“The list of schools compiled was used as a basis for the conduct of a field survey by the Technical Committee,” adding, “in some districts two schools were listed for comparative analysis by the committee.”
