Mineworkers Union salute Ghanaian workers to mark May Day

The Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) on Friday congratulated and expressed solidarity with

Ghanaian workers to commemorate this year’s May Day, which falls on Saturday. A statement issued and signed by Mr Eric Kwabena Gyima, Deputy General Secretary of the Union commended the rank

and file of workers’ union and employers for contributing their quota towards national development even under trying

conditions. “The GMWU leadership salutes Ghanaian miners for their sense of commitment, dedication and discipline, which has

created the necessary value addition to the fortunes of the mining industry, which mother Ghana is also benefiting. “Mineworkers Union will continue to show solidarity with all interest groups in an effort to address the challenges,

which confront the mining industry,” it said. The statement mentioned some of the challenges as “.improving the working and living conditions of mineworkers,

taking measures to minimize the negative effects of mining in communities, which have threaten and continue to threaten

the livelihood of our people,” it said. The statement said it was the position of the GMWU that infrastructure in the mining towns, were brought to standards

to help reflect the amount of resources taken out for these communities. “As compared to the income generated from mining activities, infrastructure development in the mining communities

continues to be a great source of concern to progressive minded citizens,” it said.
