Mills sympathises with flood victims in Volta Region

Adaklu Waya, July 27, GNA – President John Evans Atta Mills on Wednesday visited the Volta Region and sympathised flood victims. At Adaklu Waya in the Adaklu Anyigbe District President Mills donated GH¢ 2,000 to the family of Mansa Tigri, 42, who drowned in a river as a result of the floods.

There was also a pledge from the Government to support the education o= f the children of the deceased.

Govt also released relief items to the affected communities. President Mills expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and the Adaklu Waya community and said he wished he were there in happy times. Notwithstanding, the floods had afforded him the opportunity, though i= n sad times, to visit the people, reassuring them that would not be the last. The President commended the people for their community spirit, hard work and sacrifice and assured them that his administration would do its best to address their concerns.

Power, he said, belonged to the people and his government would in no way misapply the mandate given it. “Government is here to serve you. You voted us into power. Power doesn’t belong to us,” President Mills said and expressed confidence in= the people that they would renew the mandate of his government in 2012 to continue to tackle the programmes it had started.

President Mills assured the people that the Government would do whatever it took to enable them to get over their difficulty.

Torgbui Lablalu Tegbeza V, Chief of Adaklu Waya and the family of the deceased, thanked the President and his Government for the intervention. Mr Frank Tordzro, District NADMO Director, commended Government for improving the road network in the area and said it would ensure accessibility to the interior areas in times of disaster. At Blemazado in the Keta District about 10,000 people were reportedly displaced with many farms and houses destroyed.

Government made similar donation of relief items – 100 bags of 50 kilogram of rice, beans, plastic bowls and cups and mosquito coils. The President was accompanied by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Josep= h Amenowode, Women and Children Minster, Mrs Juliana Mensah, Road and Highway Minister, Mr Joe Gidisu, Deputy Minister Interior, Mr Kobby Acheampong, Mr. Daniel Kwasi Abodakpi, Ghana High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr Alex Segbefia, Deputy Chief of Staff and NADMO Coordinator, Mr Kofi Portuphy
