Former President Jerry John Rawlings and founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the death of President John Evans Atta Mills was a divine intervention to propel the party to retain power in the December polls.
“Divine intervention created a great deal of goodwill for President Mahama on his (late President Mills) demise and also public sympathy also served a fine purpose in helping to ignite the hope within the party”, the outspoken leader asserted.
He said President John Mahama since taking over from late President John Evans Atta Mills, has revived the chances of the party by showing exemplary leadership.
He made the revelation on Wednesday when addressing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.
According to him, President Mahama has salvaged the dwindling fortunes of the party and stressed that he was optimistic that the NDC will win the impending elections.
“Something positive has no doubt emerged of late. Prior to the demise of our late President, there was a lot of nervousness; there was a lot of anxiety amongst the governing party about how much of a chance they stood in the forthcoming election.”
“The emergence of John Mahama has also added a spark to the governing party and therefore reduced the old fear and anxiety; in other words, he has brought on board possibility of also winning the election”, he affirmed.
It would be recalled that for the last three years Mr. Rawlings has never been in the good books of the party’s hierarchy and has always disagreed with them on issues of policy and appointment.
The situation aggravated when the former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was alleged to have sponsored the formation of the National Democratic Party (NDP) of which she (former first lady) has been highly tipped to be the flag bearer.
