Lens — The convoy of the NDC flagbearer, Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills yesterday came under attack twice in the Volta Region.
The first attack happened at Dzodze in the Ketu North constituency, where NPP supporters using the Deputy Regional Minister, Mr. Dzamesi’s official Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number GR 7473 R, drove the said vehicle at break-neck speed going for a head-on collision with Prof. Mill’s convoy, which was coming from the opposite direction.
However by the grace of God and some very deft driving by the experienced drivers handling the vehicles in Prof. Mills’ convoy, they managed to escape unscathed and they continued with their journey.
Obviously unpleased that Prof. Mills and his convoy had managed to escape the first attack, another attack was launched at him and his convoy at Penyi. This time, a Toyota Tipper truck with Togolese registration number, with a number of flag-waving NPP supporters on board, launched a similar attack, driving directly at Prof. Mills’ convoy at break-neck speed The driver of the Tipper-Truck has since been identified as one Sabub.
Again God intervened and the dexterity of Prof. Mills’ drivers helped to save the lives of Prof. Mills and his entourage. Both incidents have been reported to the Police at Dzodze and Penyi.
This is not the first time such an attack has been made on Prof. Mills in the Volta Region. It would be recalled that a similar attack was launched on Prof. Mills sometime ago when he visited Hohoe. In that instance an NPP pick-up was driven directly at Prof. Mills’ vehicle. Even though that case was reported to the police, nothing came of that report.
It is certainly this lack of official response to these complaints that make people feel emboldened to act in anyway they choose knowing that their political masters would cover-up for them.
Indeed, but for Prof. Mills’ personal intervention, irate NDC supporters, enraged at these acts of intimidation and harassment from NPP agents and officials, would have gone after the two drivers and given them some lessons in careful driving.
Given the massive support that the NDC enjoys in the Volta region, it is clear that these acts of intimidation and harassment were deliberately being orchestrated to provoke a reaction from NDC supporters and thus create a situation that could be exploited to place the region under a state of emergency and put fear in the people of the region, with a view to limiting the region’s impact in the general elections.
