Mills commended for seeking the release of Cuban prisoners

Kampala, July 26, GNA – President John Evans Atta Mills, on Monday received a message of appreciation from Cuban Leader Raul Castro, for his efforts to secure more freedom for Cubans, form the US.

The two leaders exchanged appreciation for the role they play in the progress and development of each other’s country.

President Mills received the message from Mr Marcelino Medina Gonzazlez, First Vice Prime Minister of Cuba, at the sideline of the 15th African Heads of State Summit in Kampala, Uganda.

President Mills commended President Raul Castro and the people of Cuba for their sacrifices and support for Ghana in her times of need.

The Cuban Leader commended President Mills for sending a letter to US President Barack Obama seeking the release of five persons being held in the US, and Ghana’s efforts at ensuring the lifting of US sanctions and blockade against Cuba.

President Mills said Ghana appreciated the sacrifices of Cuban medical personnel, who work in the remotest areas of the country, living with the people and offering them medical services.

He said that Ghana Government would consider the establishment of a joint co-operation for discussions to increase the level of friendship between the two nations.

President Mills said Ghana’s support for lifting of the blockade was long overdue and fair, and added that the Government hoped the intervention would have the desired effect.

President Mills assured the Cuban Leader that the people of Ghana would forever be grateful for their sacrifices.

President Mills said that Libya had also trained and assisted in the education of some Ghanaians in a number of areas without counting the cost.

He said it was necessary for Libya and Ghana to build on their relations, adding that, “the best friend is the one who comes to your aid in times of need.”

Mr Marcelino announced that Cuba would soon establish a Center to handle larvae and malaria in Ghana.
