Mills calls for high calibre accountants

Accra, (Greater Accra), 23 April, Vice President John Atta Mills today called for high calibre accountant to instil discipline in the management of the economy. This is necessary to help stem the rising tide of financial malpractice in the system, adding that “such crimes are often committed with the support of accountants. “Very often, although this is not always the case, these crimes are committed with the connivance of those who should stop them,” Professor Mills told the opening of the second Accountants Conference in Accra. The two-day conference organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana) is on the theme: “Financial Discipline in the Management of A Developing Country.” Prof. Mills said accountants in both the private and public sectors are the custodians of the firm’s assets and asked the Institute of find ways of checking those whom by their acts siphon huge sums of government’s money. “The fact that sometimes your members are involved in these unfortunate incidents either through omission or commission, should make you interested in the search for antidotes to this scourge in our society.”
