Military base to be established on Alavanyo-Nkonya border

Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur has announced that a permanent military training school will be established on the no-man’s land between Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Biakoye District of the Volta Region.

This stems from close to a century-old conflict between the two communities.

A peace deal was brokered on Friday, January 9 by Vice President Amissah-Arthur with the paramount chiefs of the two feuding communities in attendance.

The chiefs – Nana Kojo Asiakwa of Nkonya and Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII of Alavanyo – pledged their commitment to the fresh deal.

They were charged to ensure peace for the sake of the next generation.

“Let us together sit and resolve this conflict,” charged the Paramount Chief of Akpini Traditional Area, Okpekpewuokpe Dagadu VII, who supervised the signing of the agreement.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur announced government’s intentions to build a military base between the communities.

“We plan to build a permanent military base here that will lead to training, improve the training [among military officers] and some of the other activities that the military people do.”

He indicated that government will budget for the school by close of this year.

“We are hopeful that the resources will be found this year in the budget to allow the beginning of this process of putting in permanent structures in the zone.”

The protracted conflict has led to the loss of lives and property in the two communities.
