Metro Mass Transport Company to pay part of broken down costs – Committee

Accra, Feb. 11, GNA – The Committee probing the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT), has recommended that government compel the management of t= he company to pay a certain percentage of the cost of rehabilitating the bro= ken down buses.

It also recommended that government should increase its shareholding=

capacity in the company from the current 45 per cent to at least 75 per c= ent to enable it exercise greater control. “This is to help government to recoup some of the investments made i= nto the sector,” the Committee said.

The seven-member Committee chaired by Mr Kofi Aikins was presenting its report to Mr Mike Hammah, Minister of Transport in Accra on Thursday. Even though contents of the report were not disclosed, the Ghana New= s Agency learnt that the Committee recommended that some of the broken down=

buses that have minor faults be repaired and the rest sold. The Committee was inaugurated about two months ago to investigate th= e causes of the breakdown of 1,300 metro buses as well as the leakages in generating revenue and recommend measures to forestall the situation. Mr Hammah said the Ministry would implement the recommendations that=

were in line with the government’s vision for the sector. He said government was committed to improve operations at the compan= y.
