WA, June 16, GNA – The Metro Mass Transit Company has so far dismissed six conductors who engaged in various ticket malpractices in the Upper West Region since the company began operations there two years ago.
Mr Dickson Gyawu, Wa Station Manager of the Company, who told the Ghana News Agency at Wa on Monday said, the company was determined to inject sanity into its operations to avoid past mistakes of other public transport companies.
He said the company currently had a fleet of 16 buses in the region and plied all the major routes in the region and on inter-regional routes like Wa-Bolgatanga and Wa-Tamale.
My Gyawu said the Accra, Kumasi and Sunyani stations took care of Wa-Accra, Wa-Obuasi and Sunyani-Hamile routes respectively. According to him, the introduction of the Metro Mass Transit buses in the region has brought positive developments to the transport sector as lorry fares in the region have relatively stabilised. “Since we came into the region, the private transport operators have not increased fares arbitrarily, despite frequent adjustment in the prices of petroleum products, which was not the case in the past”, Mr Gyawu observed.
He mentioned the bad nature of the roads in the region as a major contributor to the high running cost of the buses and their lifespan. He said public behaviour towards the company was not the best as aggrieved persons preferred to go public with their grievances especially against conductors without reporting to his outfit. For the company to succeed in rendering services to the public, it would need the cooperation of the general public, he added.
