Men fleeing Akwatia amidst fear of police arrest

Akwatia, Dec 11, GNA – Scores of able-bodied men last night Wednesday fled Akwatia town when news went round that security personnel had come to arrest people in connection with the disruption of election materials during the Sunday December 7, 2008 voting exercise.

Reports indicate that a mob stormed a number of polling stations and vandalized ballot boxes and other election materials in the Akwatia constituency.

The news has brought back memories of an incident in November 1997 when several men in Akwatia were arrested in a police cum military swoop leading to the death of a young boy.

Most of those, who fled the town, took refuge in nearby towns and villages.
