Members of Bawku East MHO attend workshop

Bawku (UE), Feb. 9, GNA- Forty participants of the Bawku East District mutual health insurance task force had attended a three-day sensitization workshop at Bawku in the Upper East Region.

The workshop was aimed at equipping the task force with the necessary skills to carry out their work, which involves public education, house numbering, registration and collection of premiums. In his closing address, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Abdul-Rahaman Gumah, said accessibility to health care in the area is in a deplorable state, and that government was doing its best to remedy the situation.

He said government’s intervention in the health sector through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) bears testimony to its determination to ensure equitable health delivery to the people. Mr Gumah said the district has reached an advanced stage in the establishment of the scheme.

He urged the task force to avoid partisan politics in their dealings with the people to ensure that the programme succeeds. The MCE cautioned managers of the scheme against embezzlement, adding that it would not be tolerated.

He commended Partners for Health Reform Plus (PHR Plus) for the support given to the district on the establishment of the scheme and gave the assurance that his administration would extend to the scheme its fullest cooperation to promote health delivery to the people. The Upper East Regional Coordinator for PHR Plus, Joseph Sonieker commended government for setting up the NHIS, adding that everyone needed to embrace it and give it the needed support.

He said this way, much of the health needs of the people would be met, adding that good health delivery would ultimately move the nation towards its developmental goals.

He pledged the continuous support of PHR Plus towards the consolidation of the NHIS in the region for a much more improved healthcare delivery for the people.
