Agroyesum (Ash), Feb 21, GNA – About 80 percent of the Buruli Ulcer cases reported to the Saint Martin’s Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum in the Amansie West district come from other regions and districts.
Dr Samuel Nyarko Etuaful, Medical Superintendent in-charge, disclosed this at the opening of a five-day training workshop on Buruli Ulcer for doctors and other medical personnel on the management of the disease at Agroyesum.
Doctors and other medical personnel from the Hospital, Dunkwa Government Hospital, Nkawie Government Hospital, Agogo Presbyterian Hospital and the Bechem Government Hospital are attending the workshop. They would be taken through the prevention of impairment of disability in Buruli Ulcer patients and nutrition for the sick as well as general wound management.
Dr Nyarko Etuaful said the few doctors and staffs at the hospital, which was adjudged the best district hospital in Ashanti for the promotion of health delivery last year, were performing creditably. Dr Etuaful said though the hospital was upgraded to a district hospital in 1997, it was now known worldwide for the treatment of Buruli Ulcer and commended the staff for their commitment and dedication. He also praised the District Assembly for constructing a Buruli Ulcer complex at the hospital.
Dr Edwin Ampadu, Programme Manager for the workshop, said the workshop was to help the participants to get an insight into the surgery of Buruli Ulcer. 21 Feb 04
