Medical doctor slams use of unsterilised implements by barbers

Trabuom (Ash), Dec 21, GNA- Dr (Mrs) Agatha Akua Bonney, Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Director of Health, has noted that the use of unsterilised implements by some barbers, hairdressers and traditional circumcisers (wanzams) could lead to the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

She said although sexual intercourse was the main mode of transmission of the virus, the use of unsterilised equipment could lead to the infection of unsuspecting clients.

Dr Bonney was addressing students of the Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Secondary School at Trabuom during a day’s sensitisation workshop on HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis organised by the District Health Management Team (DHMT).

She said issues concerning HIV/AIDS required a multi-sectoral approach and called on stakeholders to help in finding a lasting solution the problem.

Dr Bonney called on the public to report all known symptoms of tuberculosis to the nearest health facility for medical attention since treatment is free of charge.

Mrs Elizabeth Annan, Headmistress of the School, advised the students to desist from sexual promiscuity to prevent them from contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
