Mechanic remanded in custody for fraud

Cape Coast, May 5, GNA – Daniel Oppong, a 28-year-old mechanic was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody by a circuit court at Cape Coast for allegedly defrauding one Mr. Samuel Darko of 23.5 million cedis. He pleaded not guilty and would reappear on Wednesday May 11. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Hope Azasoo told the court, presided over by Mr. Mustapha Logoh, that Mr. Darko and Oppong were friends and that in July last year, Mr. Darko gave an amount of 30.5 million cedis to Oppong to buy him a car.

He alleged that Oppong was able to buy the car at 10 million cedis and that later that month, Darko gave him an additional three million cedis to add to remaining 20.5 million cedis, for safe keeping. Inspector Azasoo said when Darko later went to collect the money from Oppong, he could not produce it and the matter was reported to the police and he was arrested.

He said Oppong was given a police inquiry bail, and was asked to report at the court for trial, but he went into hiding until his father, who stood surety for him brought him to court on Wednesday.
