Mechanic jailed 30 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced a mechanic to 30 years imprisonment for chopping off the ear of a taxi driver and robbing him of his taxi at gun point at Kasoa.

Kwasi Owusu was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on the charge of conspiracy, 30 years on the charge of robbery and 10 years for causing harm.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

His conviction came after the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri had found him guilty.

Owusu aka Paa Solo’s accomplice, Emmanuel Benson who was arraigned earlier is serving 25 years jail term by not wasting the court’s time by admitting that he took part in the robbery.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick A. Morkeh said on August 31, 2011 at about 12:00 midnight, the Greater Accra Regional Criminal Investigation Department and an operational team had information that a Toyota Corolla Taxi had been snatched.

According to the prosecutor, the said taxi was snatched at Kasoa hence all the patrol teams were notified.

The police patrol team alerted its underground agents. Later one of their informants, called the team that he spotted the taxi at Accra New-Town.

DSP Morkeh said the team moved to the area and arrested Benson and Owusu who admitted robbing the complainant, Mr Kofi Adams.

The prosecutor said the complainant identified the convicts as those who robbed him of his taxi after chopping of his ears.
