Measurements and minor metal works begin on Adomi Bridge

Juapong, July 12, GNA – Measurements and minor metal works on the Adomi Bridge began on Saturday to precede actual emergency repair works on the 50- year-old bridge.

At about 0930 hours no official of Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) was prepared to talk but an engineer who spoke to Ghana News Agency on anonymity said they were only undertaking measurements and minor metal works before actual repair works begin on Monday, July 14 when logistics would be made available.

Meanwhile the bridge was opened to traffic on Saturday July 12, contrary to initial information from the GHA that it would be closed to traffic between 0900 hours and 1200 hours from Saturday July 12 to Saturday August 2.

A visit by GNA to the bridge revealed that due to the earlier information, travellers with the fear of being stranded in the middle of their journey set off earlier to beat the closure period. Few minutes to 0900 hours, many vehicles including commercial, private and heavy trucks were in long queues to purchase waybills to cross over before the bridge was closed.

Some curious and adventurous people including students and youth groups also travelled to the bridge to observe the cracks developed under it and how people would be ferried across the river by canoes. The situation created brisk business to some fishermen who used their canoes to ferry people under the bridge to observe the cracks it had developed.
