Sunyani (B/A), July 23, GNA – Mr. Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) has reminded the people of Kotokrom, a suburb of the Municipality, to be united irrespective of their political persuasions to ensure the development of the community.
He called on the people to eschew selfishness and greed which undermined development but sacrifice for the progress of the community.
Development, he explained, was a shared and collective responsibility and not only the responsibility of the government.
Mr Oppong-Ababio was interacting with members of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) on Thursday, as part of his tour of the Sunyani East Constituency, to acquaint himself with the development challenges confronting the communities.
The tour, his maiden visit to the area, after his appointment as the substantive MCE of the Sunyani Municipality, took him to Mensakrom, Yawhima and Kotokrom.
He described as baseless views held by some people that nothing substantial had been achieved since the NDC took over power and his assumption of office.
The MCE stressed that 70 students had benefited from a scholarship scheme, instituted last year, to help some needy students in the municipality, adding that, more entries would be opened in August through an interview to pave way for others to also benefit from the scheme.
Mr.Oppong-Ababio announced that an appeal for funds made to support the scholarship Scheme yielded GHC 12,000.00.
He because of his commitment to the welfare of the people the Municipal Assembly’s donated 250 bags of cement for the construction of accommodation facilities to house mortuary men at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani.
The Municipal Assembly has also presented 100 bags of cement for the rehabilitation of the Prisons Service’s building in Sunyani and 50 bags of cement for the renovation of the local Methodist Hospital’s facilities, he added.
Mr. Oppong Ababio revealed that out of the 300 people who were recruited for the National Forest Plantation Development Programme, in the Municipality, 25 were from Kotokrom.
The MCE appealed to parents to complement the government’s effort to ensuring the development of quality human resource for the accelerated development of the nation by cutting down on outrageous expenditure on clothes, cigarettes, funerals and alcohol to invest such resources in the education of their children.
He pledged seven more transformers would be procured to solve the problem of interruption in power supply to the traffic lights situated at the Penkwase Junction.
A request has already been made to the Ministry of Energy to that effect and the problem would soon be addressed, the MCE added.
Mr.Oppong-Ababio attributed the problem to high power usage by the lighting system in the municipality, adding they were drawing more power beyond the capacity of the existing transformers, hence the need for additional transformers.
