Ho, Jan. 22, GNA – Mr John Studdard, Mayor of London, has commended the Ghana government for initiating the country’s Disability Law and setting aside five percent of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund to support the physically handicapped.
He also praised the country’s 8,500 strong volunteer scheme describing it as “a role model not only for Africa but also the rest of the world”.
Mr Studdard gave these commendations when he paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister Mr Kofi Dzamesi in Ho on Monday. He said his visit was to identify with the celebration of the country’s achievements in the past 50 years “especially in the last few years” and the contribution of the British Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) to the country’s education sector.
Mr Studdard who inspected British Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) supported projects being undertaken by the physically disabled at Anyirwase and Kwanta near Ho said the disabled needed support no matter how small to be able to develop their skills.
This he said would take them off the streets and make them productive and self-supporting.
Responding, Mr Dzamesi commended the VSO for its support in various sectors of the country and appealed for more of its volunteers for the Region. He said the Volta Region was unique in its geographical, linguistic and ethnic and tourism mix, which made it a one-stop destination for foreign visitors who had limited time to sample Ghana’s diversities. Mr Mawutor Goh, Ho Municipal Chief Executive, said the Assembly had began a 10 million-cedi assessment process towards identifying and supporting projects that would benefit the disabled. 22 Jan. 07
